Carballes Baena Pushed Hard But Fell Well Short

Wimbledon 2024: Zverev into fourth round with another bagel

Carballes Baena pushed hard but fell well short

Sascha Zverev goes into the second week at Wimbledon without having dropped serve

Carballes Baena or RCB as he is known in the press room for ease of typing seldom comes to Wimbledon with high hopes. Once and only once before has he won a match here and never before has he taken a set off a top 30 player.

He played well against Zverev but still the gulf was enormous. His lack of firepower was brutally exposed as the German won 6-4, 6-1, 6-0 in just 79 minutes.

Another match ticked off a place in the fourth round secured and still not a service game dropped Alexander Zverev could be very happy with his Wimbledon so far.

The third seed was pushed harder by Brandon Nakashima in the previous round but still managed to win in straight sets. Again he showed that when he is in the mood to play he is almost unbeatable. Carballes Baena had one break point in the first set and that he failed to take.

After that Zverev settled into a ruthless rhythm. He won nine games on the bounce and at times made it look like he was playing an exhibition match as he repeatedly left Carballes Baena stranded at the net.

Carballes Baena, ranked 99 in the world, had won four matches in qualifying to reach the main draw and he can be proud of his efforts.

Zverev will face either Tim van Rijthoven or Nikoloz Basilashvili in the next round.
