Texas Tech Football: A Look Back at the 2015 Season

A Record-Breaking Year

Despite finishing the season with a disappointing 7-6 record, the 2015 Texas Tech football team had plenty to celebrate. The Red Raiders set school records for total offense (7,107 yards) and passing yards (5,869 yards). They also ranked among the nation's leaders in several offensive categories, including scoring offense (3rd), passing offense (1st), and total offense (2nd).

Individual Success

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes had a breakout season in 2015, throwing for 5,052 yards and 53 touchdowns. He also ran for 456 yards and five touchdowns. Mahomes was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. Wide receiver Jakeem Grant was another standout performer for the Red Raiders in 2015. He caught 88 passes for 1,268 yards and 10 touchdowns. Grant was named a first-team All-American and was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Defensive Struggles

While the Texas Tech offense was one of the most prolific in the country, the defense struggled mightily in 2015. The Red Raiders allowed 40 points per game, which ranked 124th out of 128 FBS teams. They also allowed 615 yards per game, which ranked 126th in the country. The defensive struggles were a major factor in Texas Tech's disappointing 7-6 record. The Red Raiders lost five games by 10 points or more, including a 56-35 loss to Baylor and a 59-45 loss to Texas.

Coaching Changes

Following the 2015 season, head coach Kliff Kingsbury was fired. He was replaced by Matt Wells, who had previously been the head coach at Utah State. Wells has brought in a new defensive coordinator, David Gibbs, and a new offensive coordinator, David Yost. The Red Raiders are hoping that Wells and his new staff can turn around the defense and help the team compete for a Big 12 championship in 2016.
