England v Australia Second ODI Tips: Aussie bats can go big again

England face an uphill task to level the series after being thumped by Australia in the series opener

Jason Roy and Dawid Malan fail with the bat in Perth

Having been put into bat by Australia, England's openers Jason Roy and Dawid Malan made a bright start before both falling within the space of four overs. Malan was caught behind off the bowling of Mitchell Starc for just 11, while Roy perished for 20 to Cameron Green. At that stage, England were 30-2, and they would have been in even deeper trouble had not Joe Root and Ben Stokes put on a crucial 125-run partnership for the third wicket. In the end, England were bowled out for 287. Mitchell Starc was the pick of the Australian bowlers, taking 4-47 from his ten overs.

In reply, Australia lost the early wicket of David Warner, but Travis Head and Steve Smith put on 112 for the second wicket to put the hosts in control. Head eventually fell for 69, but Smith continued to bat superbly, finishing unbeaten on 108. Marnus Labuschagne also played a key role with a brisk 58, and Australia reached their target with more than five overs to spare. Pat Cummins was the pick of the England bowlers, taking 3-62 from his nine overs.

The win gives Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second ODI will be played in Sydney on Saturday, November 19.
